Avalon Networks Inc Macintosh Classic Setup Instructions

I. Obtaining Software

You need to obtain the ppp network installer software from Avalon. This software comes as single stuffit installer program. You can obtain this on a single high density floppy disk directly from Avalon or you can download the installer off the net:

ftp to avalon.net, login as anonymous, change to the /pub/mac directory and get AvalonPPPInstallerl.bin

II. Installing the PPP software

III. Check MacTCP

The installer will place a copy of MacTCP in your control panels. Sometimes, however, the MacPPP device is not selected. Open up the MacTCP control panel. If PPP is not selected, click on it. Then click on "More..." Under the "Obtain Address:" box, make sure "Server" is selected. Under the "Domain Name Server Information:" box, there are options for Domain, IP Address, and Default. Put in the following:

MacTCP_DNS.gif

IV. Configuring the PPP software

Select from the Control Panels. Make sure that you are using Free PPP 1.0.5 or newer with Open Transport 1.1. If you are replacing an older PPP control panel, it is best to trash your old PPP preferences file as well (located in the System Folder, in the Preferences files).

Click on the Config button at the bottom. You will see the following screen:

In the Phone num section enter one of the following numbers:

Avalon Dialup Pool Phone numbers:

  358-9910 for Iowa City (V.90 56k) 338-3842 for Iowa City (33.6k)

  224-5600 for Sioux City (V.90 56k) 334-3143 for Des Moines (V.90 56k)

  668-9533 for Williamsburg (V.90 56k) 399-1221 for Cedar Rapids (V.90 56k)

  226-6827 for Waterloo (V.90 56k)

If you have a 28.8K modem, select a Port Speed of 38400 or 57600. If you have a 33.6k modem, select a Port Speed of 57600. If you have a 56k modem, select a Port Speed of 115200.

You may want to dial more than one phone number. If so, just click on "New" at the main screen when you open up "ConfigPPP". Follow the same instructions as before, except put in the different phone number. When you connect, just switch the PPP Server menu at the bottom between the different setups you created, then hit "Connect".

V. Testing your connection

In the Config PPP control panel, click on the Open button. A dialog box will come up telling you the progress of the connection. If it is successful, the progress bar will go all the way across and you will see the following in the upper left hand corner of the Config PPP control panel:

PPP_Up.gif

This is the procedure you will follow every time you connect to Avalon.

VI. Obtaining additional network software

Your PPP installer package only comes with the basic internet software packages: telnet, ftp, and mail. You will likely want to obtain additional software. In particular, you will likely want a World Wide Web browser, of which Netscape or Internet Explorer are the best. You can obtain these through the following method:

You should then see choices between IE and Netscape. Just double click on whichever browser you want. You might then need to choose between a 68K machine (Performas, older macs) and a PowerMac. If your Mac is older, you probably want Netscape 2.02. The installer is a file that ends with .hqx or .bin. Double click on this file, and a window opens asking where to download the file to.

Save the file into your Internet folder. Fetch will then proceed to download the installer. This could take up to 30 minutes.

VII. Setting up Eudora POPmail

Run Eudora. The first time, you should see a menu screen. If you don't, select Select Special -> Setup to bring it up.

You can now check your mail by selecting File->Check Mail.

VIII. Using your Avalon dial-up PPP connection

To initiate a connection you can either:

1. Bring up the Config PPP control panel and click on " Open".

2. Start any MacTCP based network program (such as Netscape).

Your connection will stay up until you shut it down. You can do this by either:

1. Shutting down your computer.

2. Bring up the Config PPP control panel and click " Close".
