These instructions are for Machintosh computers running System 7.6 or newer. The dial-up software should already be installed on your computer. These instructions will take you through the configuration of this software.
Enter the following numbers in the "Name server addr:" box:

204.71.106.2
Enter "avalon.net" in the "Search domains:" box. Your TCP/IP box should now match the one below.
Close the TCP/IP control panel and click "Save."
Enter your Login/User name located on the front page of these instructions.
Enter your password. If you check the "Save password" box you will not have to enter your password at each login.
Choose the phone number for your area from the list below and enter it in the Number: blank.

Browsing the Internet

OS8.0 and higher usually comes with some version of Internet Explorer (IE) as a browser. Older operating systems have Netscape Navigator . Once connected to Avalon, you can use this version of IE or (Netscape) as your regular browser or use it to download a newer version IE OR Netscape. All versions of web browsers can be found on our webpage (www.avalon.net) under the Software section.
Your browser is probably located in a folder labeled "Internet" or something similar. If you can't find a browser you can user the Finder to locate it. To user the Finder click on the computer icon in the top right of your screen and select Finder. Next, Choose Find under the File menu or type openapple f.
Make sure you are searching on your main hard drive and enter the file or program you are looking for in the right text field. (In this case type either "Netscape" or "Internet Explorer") A window should appear showing the files found and where they are located underneith.
When you launch the browser you should see the ``Start Page'' (or Home Page). You can set this to whatever you want by going in the IE preferences (or settings), or Netscape general preferences (under the options menu) and find the spot for home page. If you know the address of a website you want to look at, just type in the web address in the Location (or Address) field on your browser and hit return. If you want to search for anything, the browser has a ``search'' option on it that when chosen takes you to a few standard search engines. Netscape Navigator Mail
Setup
Open the "Options" menu and choose "Mail and Preferences." Click on the> tab.
In the space marked Incoming and Outgoing Mail servers enter: mail.avalon.net
Enter your Login/User name in the POP user ID field. Click on the "Identity" tab.
Enter your real name and Email address ( username@avalon.net ). If you want Netscape to save your password, so you won't have to enter it each time, click on the "Organization" tab and check the "Save Password" box. Click OK.
To Use
To use email, click on the little envelope in the lower right-hand corner. You'll see 3 window panes. The top left box is the folder window. When you click on a folder, the messages in that folder are shown in the top right box. When you click on a message, it is shown in the bottom box. The size of the boxes can all be adjusted by dragging the separator bars.
To check for new email, just click the Get Mail button. New mail is placed in your inbox folder. To send mail, just click the To: Mail button. After you have entered an email address, subject, and message, click the Send Now button to send email.

Netscape Communicator Mail
Setup
Open up the User Profile Manager in the Netscape Communicator folder. Click on "New..." to create a new email account. Enter your real name and email address ( username@avalon.net ) Choose your profile folder. The default location for this is usually fine.
Open Netscape. You should have the main Netscape window and a second window with four icons in it: Navigator, Mailbox, Discussions, and Composer Click on Mailbox. If you don't see this little window, go under the Communicator menu (the menu with the Navigator icon, on the left side) and open Messenger mailbox. This should prompt you to finish setting up your server preferences.
Under the Mail & Groups, Click on Mail Server.
Put in your Avalon Username in the "Mail server user name".
Put in mail.avalon.net for Outgoing (SMTP) mail server.
Put in mail.avalon.net for Incoming (POP3) mail server.
If you want Netscape to save your password for checking mail, so you won't have to enter it each time,
Click on the "More Options... " button. Click the box next to "Remember my mail password"
Click on OK on the Preferences menu.
To Use
To check for new mail, click on the "Get Msg" icon. Under the row of icons there is a little bar that says Inbox. If you click on this bar, you'll see other folders. You use this t o switch between mail folders. When you download new mail, it automatically gets placed in your Inbox folder.
To send mail, click on the New Msg icon. Put the email address of the person in the To: field. Put in a subject and then type your message. Once you're finished, click on the "Send" icon in the top left to send your email.

Outlook Express
Outlook Express is the email software that comes with most versions of Internet Explorer. This set of instructions is specifically from IE 4.0 but should work for most versions of Outlook Express.
Setup
Choose Edit -> Preferences
Click on New Account, and enter your email address. Leave the account type set to POP, click OK.
Fill in Account information: Full name, email address again, and for SMTP Server enter:
In the Receiving Mail section:
Click OK
To create multiple accounts, follow these same Outlook Express instructions using the other email address you want to check. To switch between accounts choose Edit -> Preferences and select the account you want or go to Tools -> Send & Receive -> account name.
Checking and Sending Mail
To send mail, click on the Compose Message button. Enter the email address, subject, and message body. Once complete, click on the Send icon up top to send the message.
To check your mail, click on the Send & Receive button. This will ask you for your password and check for new mail. Any new mail is placed in your Inbox. On the left side of the Outlook Express window is your collection of folders. To see the messages in a folder, just click on the folder and all messages are shown in the window frame on the top right. Clicking on a specific message will bring up the message text in the window frame on the bottom right.
