Avalon Networks Inc. Windows 3.1 Setup Instructions

Avalon Networks Inc. Windows 3.1 Setup Instructions

I) Initial Setup

For everything to work properly you need to know which Com Port your modem is on (normally 1, 2, 3 or 4). If you're not sure which port your modem lives on, you can use Windows Terminal to find it.

To use Windows Terminal to find the Com Port of your modem you need to go through the following steps:

1) Click on the Accessories program group and then choose Terminal .

2) Once Terminal has loaded, click on Settings.

3) Then click on Communications.

4) A window will appear, and under the heading of "connector", is listed COM ports, write the COM port number that is listed down.

II) Running the Windows Installer

1) Insert the Avalon Networks Inc. floppy disk and click on your Main program group. Then double click on the File Manager . At the top of the File Manager click on the [A] drive (the floppy drive).

2) You should see two files: avalwin.exe and install.bat. Double click on install.bat. The screen will go black while the files are being extracted to your hard drive.

3) When the screen comes back, click on your [C] drive, your hard drive. Near the top you should see a folder called atemp. Double click on it to open the atemp folder. It should contain a program called install.exe, double click on it and the Avalon Networks Inc. Installer will start.

4) Click on Start Install. Once the install has finished, click OK to restart your computer.

III) Configuring Trumpet Winsock

Whenever you want to get onto the internet to read mail, surf the web, or get files, you will *always* need to connect to Avalon first with Trumpet Winsock. Trumpet Winsock is the program that allows other programs like WS-FTP, Netscape, or Eudora, to talk to the internet.

1) Double on the Trupet Winsock, from the Avalon Internet Services program group.

2) Now set the communications parameters (if needed). Click on File and then choose Setup. A screen with the configuration options for Trumpet Winsock will be displayed. By default Winsock will look for a modem on COM2, if your modem (as you found by using Terminal) is on a different port, change the Slip Port at the bottom to the COM port number that your modem lives on. If you have a 28.8 or higher modem, change the Slip Port Rate to 57600. Click on Ok to save your parameters, and then click on Ok when Trumpet warns you that it has to be restarted for the settings to take effect.

3) With Trumpet Winsock still open, click on File and then choose PPP Options. Put a check in Use PAP and fill-in the username and password that you chose when you set your account up. Click on Ok to close the box.

4) You now need to set the username and password and phone number you'll use to call Avalon. To do this, click on Dialer and then choose setup.cmd at the bottom. Trumpet will now ask you some questions to complete the setup. Fill in the phone number, username, and password.

Avalon Dialup Pool Phone numbers:

358-9910 for Iowa City (V.90 56k) 338-3842 for Iowa City (33.6k) 224-5600 for Sioux City (V.90 56k) 334-3143 for Des Moines (V.90 56k) 668-9533 for Williamsburg (V.90 56k) 399-1221 for Cedar Rapids (V.90 56k) 226-6827 for Waterloo (V.90 56k)

IV) Dialing out with Trumpet Winsock

1) Select dialer

2) Select login

Once you have done this, the modem will attempt to connect to Avalon dial-up services. If all goes well, the last message you will see will be:

PPP Enabled

My IP address = X.X.X.X

This means you are connected to Avalon and can proceed to use Internet applications such as Netscape, Eudora, or WS_FTP.

If you don't hear the modem dialing, or do not receive the above PPP enabled message, then contact

Avalon Tech support.

V) Installing Netscape Navigator

Netscape is a web browser. It allows you to surf around on the web and view other people's webpages and do searches for information that might interest you. Note: Before beginning this section, make certain that you have dialed into Avalon with Trumpet Winsock and are connected. WS_FTP will not work if you are not connected.

1) In your Avalon Internet Services group you should see an icon named WS_FTP, double click on it and a box will open that may show a series of blank boxes. At the very top where it says Profile click on the down arrow and choose Avalon, then click Ok. You may hear a train whistle blow, that means that WS_FTP has connected to Avalon successfully.

2) You should see something in the lower right box on the screen that says something like n16e303.exe. Click on it once, and it will turn blue (or become highlighted), then click on the arrow in the center of the WS_FTP window that points to the left box.

3) A box should come up telling you the ammount of bytes sent and the esimated time, you are now downloading Netscape so that you can install it on your machine. The download may take 20-30 minutes, once it has completed you may click on the Exit button in the lower right corner of the WS_FTP window.

4) At this point you can close your internet connection with Avalon while you set up Netscape. To hang up, you need to (in Trumpet Winsock) go to Dialer and choose Bye.

4) You now need to go back to your File Manager and click on the C drive. From there choose the atemp folder again, and look for a folder called netscape. Open that folder and you should see the file you downloaded, probably n16e303.exe.

5) Double click on it and the screen should go black as the files are uncompressed. Once you are back at the File Manager click on the atemp folder again, and then open the netscape folder again, you should now see a file called setup.exe. Double click on it and the installation for Netscape Navigator will begin. Once the installation has finished you can begin surfing the web!

VI) Configuring your email

After installing Netscape and the Avalon floppy disk, you now have 2 different email clients available to you, Eudora and Netscape Mail. To configure one of these (Avalon recommends the Netscape Mail client if you are unfamiliar with email) you need to fire up Trumpet Winsock and Netscape and view:
