For over 165 years,
First Baptist Church has been a prominent landmark in the
heart of Iowa City, right across the street from the University
of Iowa campus. We consider ourselves fortunate to be situated
in a vibrant community, situated at the convergence of the
Old Capitol Cultural District and the Iowa River Cultural
District. We are committed to being a vital spiritual presence
in our neighborhood and throughout our community.
Our
church is located at 500 North Clinton Street, at the corner
of Clinton and Fairchild, five blocks north of the Pentacrest.

Building
Our present building was completed in 1955. It includes a
Sanctuary, a Fellowship Hall with kitchen, a suite of offices,
and a number of rooms for Church School classes and other
small groups. We are stewards of a beautiful stone building,
designed in a Gothic revival architectural style. The Sanctuary
is built in the shape of a cross—according to ancient Christian
tradition—and features attractive stained glass windows, and
pointed arches and a vaulted ceiling that direct the worshipper's
vision heavenward. A large stone tower rises on the northwest
corner of the transept.
Parking
Ample parking is available within a block of First Baptist
Church. In the alley behind the church, there is a parking
lot with room for a dozen cars. We try to reserve these spaces
for our guests, and for those who require assistance or extra
time in walking. Three are designated as handicap spaces.
By agreement with the University of Iowa, church members with
keys and hang-tags may park in University Lot #24, directly
across the street from the church. If you would like to see
about obtaining a permit for Lot #24, contact the Church
Office . In addition, on-street parking is usually available
on North Clinton Street and Fairchild Street. On Sundays until
1:00 P.M., parking is permitted on the south side of Church
Street, and the west side of North Dubuque Street.
Accessibility
Most areas of our building are handicapped-accessible. The
Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall are both accessible by elevator.
Large-print orders of worship are available for those who
need them.
Partners
in Mission and Ministry
As good stewards of the building with which we have been entrusted,
we share our space with other local ministries and community
organizations, such as United
Campus Ministry, and Alcoholics Anonymous.
